Dutch Virtual Numbers in a Nutshell

A Dutch virtual phone number (also called a Netherlands DID) gives you a +31 phone number that rings on your softphone, PBX, or mobile app — wherever you are in the world. Customers in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, or Utrecht see a local Dutch number when your company calls, and you appear as a local business even if your team works from another country.

Who Needs a Dutch Number?

  • Non-Dutch companies selling to the Netherlands — show a local number instead of a foreign one to build trust
  • Dutch startups with remote teams — route calls to team members anywhere while keeping one Dutch number
  • E-commerce stores — offer Dutch customer support without setting up a local office
  • Consultants and freelancers — separate business calls from personal, without a second SIM

Dutch Area Codes You Can Choose From

Popular local area codes:

  • +31 20 — Amsterdam and surrounding area
  • +31 10 — Rotterdam
  • +31 30 — Utrecht
  • +31 70 — The Hague
  • +31 40 — Eindhoven
  • +31 50 — Groningen

National non-geographic numbers (+31 85) are also available — these work across the whole Netherlands without tying you to a specific city.

Regulatory Requirements

The Netherlands is one of the stricter European countries for number assignment. The Dutch telecom regulator (ACM) requires:

  • Company registration — a valid KvK (Chamber of Commerce) number
  • Business address — either a Dutch physical address, or a qualifying non-Dutch EU address
  • Authorized signatory ID — passport or national ID of a company director

If you don't have a KvK registration yet, you can still get numbers in other European countries like the UK, Germany, or Belgium while you set up your Dutch entity.

How Long Does Activation Take?

For businesses with a valid KvK and matching address, Dutch numbers typically activate within 1 business day after documents are uploaded. The actual number order is instant — only the regulatory review adds delay.

Our portal shows you exactly where your order is in the approval pipeline, so you are never left wondering. See the Getting Started guide for a full onboarding walkthrough.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I port my existing Dutch number to DIDfarm?

Yes — in most cases. Porting takes 5 to 10 business days and requires a Letter of Authorization signed by the account owner. Contact support for a porting quote.

Can I receive SMS on a Dutch number?

Geographic numbers (like +31 20) cannot receive SMS in the Netherlands due to regulation. Dutch mobile numbers (+31 6) can receive SMS. For programmatic SMS, see the Messaging product.

Can I use a Dutch number without a Dutch address?

ACM requires a qualifying business address. If you are a non-Dutch EU company, your registered EU address usually qualifies. If you are outside the EU, you will need a local address or a registered agent in the Netherlands.
